exercise 03
Compressor release
Identify how a compressor releases after gain reduction.
setup
D01What this trains
Compressor release ear training
Release time changes how compression recovers after the signal crosses the threshold. These rounds train you to hear sustain, groove movement, and pumping without watching a gain-reduction meter.
Training focus
- Compressor release recognition
- Gain-reduction recovery
- Pumping and groove movement
Listen for
- Whether the level recovers quickly or stays tucked down
- How cymbals, room tone, or sustain swell after hits
- Whether the groove breathes naturally or pumps too obviously
Exercise FAQ
What does compressor release sound like?
Release affects how quickly the compressor stops reducing gain. Short release can feel lively or pumpy; longer release can feel smoother but may stay clamped.
Why is release hard to hear?
The cue happens after the loud moment, so it is easy to chase level or attack instead. Repetition helps you focus on recovery.
Does this replace mixing with meters?
No. It makes the meter easier to interpret because you know what the recovery behavior sounds like.
